- Today's fishing rods can be divided into four distinct categories.
- Baitcasting, Spinning, Spin-Casting, and Fly Rods. Each has subtle variations,
- but these are the basics. For bass fishing, Bait Casting and Spinning rods
- seem to be the most popular. Many beginning bass fishermen however, have found
- the Spin-Cast rig to be the easiest to learn. Fly fishing for bass is very
- popular, and at times can be extremely productive.

- Most professional bass fishermen rely on the Bait Casting rod and the
- Spinning Rod. Bait Casting equipment usually requires a bit more practice to
- become proficient at, but offers tremendous versatility, durability and
- reliability. Spinning rods on the other hand, seem to handle small baits
- better than casting rods. In general, Spinning rods will cast a bit further
- than Bait Casting rods if the same weight lure were used on each. Another
- advantage of Bait Casting rods is their ability to utilize heavier line than
- Spinning rods.

- Spin-casting equipment has many of the benefits of both Bait Casting and
- Spinning Rods. It's major drawbacks seem to be that it does not handle
- line much above 14lb test well, and it doesn't tend to contend with large
- fish and heavy cover as well. With todays new spin-cast reels however, some
- of these shortcomings made fade away.
